Productivity tips often feel like something that we are all aware of, and yet don’t know how to apply. Around the time of the new year, everyone is frantically making resolutions or goals, including you. But while you may have a lock on your personal goals, workplace goals and objectives are a whole different ball game.
It’s not just enough for you to know what your workplace goals for 2019 look like. Maybe your manager wants to know as well, just so that she can help you achieve them. But now that you have drawn up your goals for 2019, you face a different problem. How to achieve them all?
But fear not, there’s a way you can achieve your workplace goals in 2019. Here are some productivity tips that can help. Mind you, they are not productivity hacks that can help you power through your goals. Rather, they are methods that can help you diligently work towards achieving them.
Set The Right Goals
Lofty goals (no matter how good they look) are not always easy to achieve. More often than not, they might lead to failure. Or often, we don’t even tackle them, because the goal feels too lofty to begin with. On the other hand, simple goals might not even challenge us and give us a false sense of achievement that will soon diminish as the year progresses.
Use the SMART goals method to set goals that challenge you but also seem achievable. Or maybe there’s another method you used to set goals. Regardless of the method you use, ensure that your goal list challenges you, but does not overwhelm you.
Set A Time Management System
Even the toughest of goals can be achieved, but only if it is guided by discipline. It is discipline, not genius or intellect, that ensures goals can be achieved. The unfortunate downside of discipline is that it does not come naturally to all of us. Some of us are blessed with the ability to be productive at the drop of a hat. The rest of us, on the other hand, struggle with marshaling our thoughts and getting our brains to focus.
Set up a disciplined routine for yourself. Your routine does not need to ensure that you work nose to the grindstone to achieve your goals. But it should structure a certain period of time where you can work without distractions. Even dedicated pockets of focused time will ensure that you can work towards achieving your goals, rather than try to expend all your energy at one go and feeling discouraged about not reaching your goal.
Schedule Time Off From Social Media
I’m not going to say social media is evil, but there is no denying that it does distract us. When working on your goals, ensure that you schedule time off. This means no email alerts, no notification pings, no quickly scrolling through Facebook or Instagram or tweeting on Twitter. Instead, completely silence your phone and place it some distance away from you. You can even prioritize notifications to ensure that you don’t miss out on important messages.
Prioritize Your Goals
Even if your goal list only has 5 goals, there must certainly be a hierarchy of goals. Based on your interest, prioritize those goals as High Priority, Medium Priority, Low Priority. This way, you know what you want to focus on first. And you will not try to stretch yourself in five different ways in order to achieve your goals.
Break Your Goals Down Into Chunks
Assume you want to write 100 blog posts in a year. By itself, it is a difficult goal. However, when it is broken down into chunks, suddenly it’s a lot more doable. So 100 blog posts in a year becomes 25 blog posts each quarter. This way, 100 will not be the number you focus on. Rather, it will be 25, 50, 75 and then finally 100.
Numbers (especially the larger and higher they are) can be overwhelming to us. This is why it is prudent to divide a numeric goal into smaller segments.
