Are you having trouble staying motivated and sticking to your resolutions, just after a month into the new year? Well, you aren’t alone. You may set out with the best of intentions, but with unexpected emergencies, new initiatives, and competing priorities for your time and attention, it can be challenging to stay on track towards your long-term goals.

Fortunately, it’s never too late to course correct. Here are three things that you can do to reinvigorate yourself to work on your goals.

Set SMART Goal

Picture yourself meeting that goal as clearly as possible. Be specific. Where are you? What does it look like? What are you feeling? Who is around you? This approach is important because it allows you to understand what you actually aim for and how you should get there.

For example, if your goal is to present at a conference, take a few moments to imagine yourself presenting. What are you wearing? How is the audience reacting? What is the presentation about? How long is it? The positive effects of visualization may be exactly what is needed to get you excited again.

Monitor Your Goal Progress

You should be tracking your goals and objectives, but you don’t need to wait until it’s achieved, to celebrate. Breaking up a big yearlong goal (or even a quarterly goal) into smaller increments not only makes the goal more manageable but also allows you to acknowledge small steps towards an achievement.

One easy way to implement this is to track your small wins on a weekly basis. There’s no limit to how small the movement can be. If your goal is to publish a whitepaper, one week’s win can be: “selecting the topic” or “completing the outline.” The positive reflection will provide additional momentum to keep making smaller movements forward.

Re-evaluate

Once you have your goal and your road-map, you should be ready and willing to review your direction frequently. Think of it as course-correction – if you don’t check in on the way, you may end up in a completely different destination. Similarly, you may get halfway to the goal and realize that it wasn’t the exact right goal and it needs to be adjusted – that’s okay, too! Perhaps you set out to publish a whitepaper and determined that the industry actually needs a series of more actionable blog posts.

Re-adjustment isn’t a failure. It is a sign that you’re actively working towards something and paying attention. Engagedly makes employee goal setting and tracking easy with the objectives and key results (OKR) feature. Once you create your vision and action plan, you’ll be able to easily document, track and adjust your goals as needed, with the collaboration tools available to help keep you accountable.
